Justice for Hungary! Appeal of the Presidium of the World Federation of Hungarians

At its meeting on 17 March, 2012, the Presidium of the World Federation of Hungarians discussed the widespread political and press campaigns that are being conducted against Hungary in various countries of the world at the present time.  In the interests of truth, integrity, and fairness, it was decided to issue the following appeal.

MvszThe Presidium of the World Federation of Hungarians denounces the campaign of hate that has been under way for months against Hungary, her people, and her government.

These anti-Hungarian activities in the world press and in various political forums remind us ominously of the turn of the twentieth century, when millions of Europeans were shamelessly misled by the grossest lies into forming a wholly unfounded picture of Hungary as the enemy.  The logical, unavoidable outcome of that process had to be the Treaty of Trianon which led to the dismemberment of the millennial Hungarian nation.

Today, the German, French, American, Canadian, Dutch (but even the Austrian and Swiss) media appear to compete with each other in propagating untruths about Hungary, the Hungarian Government, and the Hungarian people.

The World Federation of Hungarians, one of the oldest and the largest independent Hungarian NGOs in the world, setting aside its own well-justified grievances concerning the lack of support (and even downright animosity) from the government, wishes to take up most emphatically the defence of the country, her people, and her democratically elected legitimate government, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

We remind all politicians and journalists (heirs apparent to those responsible for Trianon) who gratuitously attack, unacceptably slander, and unforgivably incite against our country, government, and people, of the words of the former President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt:  “This is the opportunity for me to express my thanks to the Hungarian nation for the heroism, with which she defended the European civilization, sword in hand, for close to a thousand years.”[1]

We call on all Hungarians and their relevant organizations to join in our declaration, and on each and every individual person to promote, in keeping with their particular circumstances, the defence of our country, people, and government.

Justice for Hungary!  Justice for Europe!

[1] On April 2, 1910,  Theodore Roosevelt, former President of the United States of America and a historian, in a speech before the Hungarian Parliament stated: “This is the opportunity for me to express my thanks to the Hungarian nation for the heroism, with which she defended the European civilization, sword in hand, for close to a thousand years.  The fate of this nation in the past was to defend against every uncivilized attack from the East, not only herself but also the West, not just the European West but also America in the womb of Europe.  I say this, because I know your history and I would not declare myself to be a cultured man if I did not know it.  I thank you once again.  I ask every representative to declare in every district that America is indebted to the Hungarian people.”
